Southern Local #4 - Mothers Day BBQ - Waterworks - May 10

This is the fourth Southern Local event for 2026. The Waterworks Reserve is a tranquil park at the foot of Kunanyi, beloved by Hobart residents. There are two scenic dams to run around, numerous paths and  playground equipment, as well as steep hillsides, with sometimes runnable and sometimes thick vegetation riddled with old sandstone quarries and cliff lines. An excellent location for the novice and seasoned orienteer alike.

More information and pre-entry on Eventor

Five courses will be available – Long, Medium, Shortened Medium, Short and Novice. If you don’t like traversing steep rocky hillsides, but still enjoy a navigational challenge, we recommend entering the Shortened Medium course. All courses will utilise the new shared walking and mountain bike track that links the Waterworks with the Pipeline Track. This well-made track winds its way gently uphill.

It is Mother’s Day so we have booked the BBQ site from 10am to 1pm. Are you a mother?  Bring your kids along to show them how much fun orienteering is. Do you have a mother? At last!  – she can go orienteering instead of having to suffer politely through some boring morning tea. BYO picnic or BBQ food for lunch after the event. The weather is bound to be perfect.

Tas Schools Champs and OST 5 - Currawong Lakes - May 17

This orienteering event is one of the school selection events, being held on a new map produced by Mike Morffew.

Currawong Lakes https://www.currawonglakes.com/ is privately owned land near Lake Leake, with luxury cabin accommodation situated in a beautiful environment. A variety of outdoor activities are offered. The owners approached us to set up orienteering for their clients and we are using the area as a result.

Runnability is generally quite good, due to the semi alpine vegetation. The underlying geology is dolerite; however stony ground is significant on the steepest edges only. The combination of an extensive track network and spur gully terrain will make for some interesting route choices and good orienteering.

The business owners like to maintain a tranquil environment for their guests and are not taking guests other than orienteers for the Sunday. I can highly recommend the place to any orienteers who would like to stay there over the weekend. They may offer discounted rates to orienteers. Minimum 2 nights stay.

Further information will appear in Eventor as course setting details etc are finalised.
