FRIDAY 10 APRIL 2009
Elite Prologue, Family Relays and Public Prologue:
These events will be held in the Trevallyn State Reserve only 5 km from central
Launceston starting with the Elite Prologue at 11.30 am. There will
be plenty of time for anyone arriving at Devonport by ship to drive the 100
km to Launceston that morning, as the ferry normally arrives at about 7.00
am. In addition this start time allows for anyone arriving on flights up to
10.30 am to get there on time. There will be an official opening of the Carnival
at 1.00 pm followed by presentation of Elite Prologue prizes. Following the
official opening and Prologue presentations there will be a Family Relays
briefing at 1.30 with a mass start at 1.45 pm. At 2.00 pm the Public Prologue
will commence with starts of 8 runners at a time every 2 minutes. The Elite
Prologue and Public Prologue courses have multiple butterfly loops and control
sites visited on multiple occasions. In addition there will be Family Relay
controls interspersed, so all runners are urged to take particular care to
check control numbers carefully! We are putting a lot of emphasis on the Family
Relays as a very traditional part of the Easter carnival. Accordingly any
elites who wish to make up a family team are encouraged to do so and all such
teams will be official.
GETTING THERE: From central Launceston drive west to Bridge Rd crossing the Gorge and continue along Trevallyn Rd, Gorge Rd, Bald Hill Rd, Veulalee Ave and Reatta Rd, finally turning left onto Duck Reach Rd. The assembly area is at the end of Duck Reach Rd. Intersections will be signed.

complex network of thickly vegetated erosion gullies. Last used 6 years
ago and recently remapped following the planting of tree farms. This day is
a world ranking event.

Royal George is an old tin mining town and is surrounded by farmland and open
eucalypt forest with extensive areas of granite. This day will be in rolling
lightly forested hills featuring some granite, some sandstone, some tin mining
and some spur and gully.
GETTING THERE: From Launceston head south on the Southern Outlet and Midland Highway (Highway 1) for approximately 55 km to Conara where you turn left for 25 km on the Esk Main Rd (A4). At Avoca turn right at signs for the last 10 km to the event, about 5 km before Royal George. Total distance about 90 km, driving time about 1 hour 10 minutes. All sealed roads.
MONDAY 13 APIL 2009
Easter 3 Days, Day 3 - Royal George: Day 3 stays in the Royal
George area crossing the Royal George Rd to a new area only recently mapped
by Alex Tarr and features a broad, lightly forested plateau dissected by a
network of valleys with granite rock faces and boulders and tin mining.
A great finale to the 3 days.
GETTING THERE: From Launceston head south on the Southern Outlet and Midland Highway (Highway 1) for approximately 55 km to Conara where you turn left for 25 km on the Esk Main Rd (A4). At Avoca turn right at signs and drive into the small Royal George township, a further 15 km away. In the middle of town turn left at signs and cross the bridge driving a further 3 km to the assembly area. Total distance about 100 km, driving time about 1 hour and 30 minutes, mostly on sealed roads. The exception is the last 3 km which is on a farm road out to the assembly area. This road is in good condition with no rocks or boggy sections but it is narrow. Accordingly plan the extra 20 minutes drive time.
WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL 2009:
Midweek Event 1 - At Fonthill 120 km south of Launceston:
Fonthill is a sheep grazing property with large areas of open forest, first mapped and used for orienteering in 2007. This event will probably take the form of a 3 hour fun rogaine ending up at the farmhouse which offers a spit roast and comfortable but inexpensive bunk house accommodation for the night.
GETTING THERE: From Launceston drive south on the Midland Highway towards Oatlands, about 110 km south of Launceston. About 10 km before Oatlands turn left on C307, York Plains Rd and drive for approximately 20 km to the Fonthill property. Total distance about 120 km, driving time about 1 hour 40 minutes.
THURSDAY 16 APRIL 2009:
Midweek event 2 – Verwood: For those taking part in
Wednesday's event it's just a short hop up the road to the fascinating and
unusual terrain of the Verwood property near Ross for a casual day’s
orienteering. Get your lunch from the Ross Bakery on the way and enjoy
a picnic in the bush. Verwood is a fascinating and unusual map.
Almost flat, its features are largely pits and knolls created when gravel
was mined here some 20 years ago.
GETTING THERE: From Fonthill drive back up the Midlands Highway towards Launceston until just past the Ross turnoff. Turn left (west) down Auburn Rd for about 15 km and finally turn left on Verwood Rd into the property. Total distance from Fonthill approximately 60 km, driving time approximately 1 hour. Driving time from Launceston also approximately 1 hour.
SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2009:
Galaxy Sprint and tasmanian Sprint Distance Championships: University
of Tasmania Launceston Campus. Mapped especially for this event,
this will have elite and public sprint format events aimed to raise a high
level of public and media interest.

SUNDAY 19 APRIL 2009:
NOL and Badge Event, Livelys Bog - St Helens: To round the
carnival off is a NOL / badge event in the spectacular countryside north of
St Helens on the recently remapped Livelys Bog. For those who enjoyed
Littlechild Creek (2005 Australian Champs) Livelys is the adjacent map and
offers similar spectacular orienteering terrain.
GETTING THERE: From Launceston travel south on the Southern Outlet and Midland Highway to Conara and turn left up the Esk main Road. Drive through Avoca, Fingal and St marys and drop down to the coast through St marys Pass for the final few km to St Helens. The event is on the Ansons Bay Rd - drive north through St Helens and turn right about a km out of town. Drive for about 10 km along this road and look for signs. About 170 km and between 2 and 2.5 hours from Launceston.
